Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Iliotibial Band Syndrome is a common knee injury and the leading cause of lateral knee pain in runners. It is characterized by painful inflammation of the iliotibial band (the think band of fascia that extends from the outside of the pelvis and down over the hip and knee) that is caused by continual rubbing of the band over the femur and repeated extension of the knee during physical activity.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome is an overuse injury that is commonly treated with rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and (rarely) surgery. It is preventable by making sure you properly stretch before and after physical activity, engaging in physical activity at a speed that matches your fitness level and not overworking your muscles and joints.
